My words
How do I save words to learn later?
Section titled “How do I save words to learn later?”In a dictionary entry or in an AI explanation, click the star ☆ next to the word. It is saved to the My words tab with its meaning, reading and, when available, the sentence where you found it. Click the star again to remove it. In My words you can search, listen, look a word up again or delete it (with Undo).
Where are my saved words stored, and how many can I save?
Section titled “Where are my saved words stored, and how many can I save?”Your words are stored privately with your Google account in the add-on’s storage, not in the document, so other people who use the document don’t see them and your list follows you to every document. There is room for roughly 3,000 to 4,000 words; mastered words leave the list automatically, so it rarely fills up. When it is over 80% full, My words shows a storage bar and a short note suggesting a review. We recommend copying your list from time to time as a backup (see export).
How do I export my words to Google Sheets, Anki or Quizlet?
Section titled “How do I export my words to Google Sheets, Anki or Quizlet?”In the My words tab:
- The copy button copies your list (Word, Meaning, Example, From, To) separated by tabs. Paste it into Google Sheets, Excel, Anki or Quizlet.
- The table button inserts your words as a table into the document at the cursor, handy for handouts, printing and sharing with others (see sharing a word list). Which words: use the filters under the search box (Added: today / last 7 days / last 30 days, In this document, Due) or click Select and tick the words you want. Ticked words win over the filters; with nothing ticked, the words the filters show are used.
How do I share a word list with my students or friends?
Section titled “How do I share a word list with my students or friends?”- Open a document (for example the reading you are teaching) and the add-on, then go to My words.
- Pick the words: the In this document filter shows your words that appear in this reading; you can also filter by date added or click Select and tick words one by one.
- Click the table button, keep “Add a line inviting readers…” ticked and click Insert. The words go into the document as a table (word, meaning, example) with a short line linking to the add-on.
- Share the document with edit access (Editor). Google add-ons only run for people who can edit a document; if you share it view-only, readers must first make their own copy (File > Make a copy), which keeps the word list. The line under the table tells them this. Whoever opens it with Docs Paragraph Translate sees “Shared word list … new words for you” (also as a message when the sidebar opens) and can click Add to My words to get the words with their meanings and examples, ready to review. Words they already have keep their own meaning and review progress. People who don’t have the add-on yet can install it from the link under the table. The list keeps working if you edit the table (add or remove rows), in copies of the document, and when the language line and the table are copied together into another document.
How do I import or restore a word list?
Section titled “How do I import or restore a word list?”In My words, click the upload button, paste a list copied from My words (or from a spreadsheet) and click Import. Each line is: Word, Meaning, Example, From, To, separated by tabs. Lines with only Word and Meaning use the languages selected at the top. Words you already have are updated, not duplicated.
How does reviewing my words work?
Section titled “How does reviewing my words work?”Saved words come back for review just before you are likely to forget them. In My words, click “Review N words” (the tab badge shows how many are due). Each word is practised with an exercise that fits how well you know it:
- New words: choose the correct meaning, listen and choose the word you hear, or (for things you can picture, like apple or bicycle) choose the matching picture or name the picture.
- Familiar words: see the meaning and choose the word, or choose the word missing from its sentence.
- Well-known words (Latin-script languages): type the word; a small accent mistake still counts and the correct spelling is shown. Reviews are scheduled with FSRS, the same method Anki uses: each word gets its own schedule from how well and how long you have remembered it, so the gaps grow (for example 3, then about 10, then about 30 days) and a word you remember even after a long break jumps further ahead. Recalling a word (typing it, filling the sentence, choosing it from its meaning) moves it further than just recognising it among options. A wrong answer or “I don’t know” shows the answer, brings the word back later in the session and shortens its next gap, without starting it over. A short chime tells you when an answer is right, a soft low note when it is wrong, and a little tune plays when you finish; tap the music note at the top of the review to turn these sounds off or on. Keyboard: 1–4 choose an answer, Enter continues. When a word is remembered so well that its next review would be about 4 months away, it counts as mastered and leaves My words automatically to keep the notebook light; the number of mastered words is shown under Your progress. If you need a word again later, just save it again. Up to 20 words per session; reviewing also keeps your day streak. When nothing is due, the button becomes “All caught up — practice more”: it drills up to 10 words (today’s words first) with the same exercises, without changing when they come back for review. Free on every plan.
Can I get email reminders to review my words?
Section titled “Can I get email reminders to review my words?”Yes. In the My words tab, turn on “Email me review reminders” (under the Review button). You only get an email when words are due for review and you have not reviewed for a few days, at most one email a week, sent from dpt@vietutd.com to your Google account address. If you ignore a few reminders in a row, they stop until you use the add-on again. To stop them, turn the switch off, or click “Stop these reminders” at the bottom of any reminder email. To keep the reminders accurate, the add-on sends our reminder service only the number of words due on each day, your time zone, your interface language and the last document you used, never your words or your text.
How does speaking practice work?
Section titled “How does speaking practice work?”When you review your words, some cards ask you to speak:
- New words: listen to the word, then say it aloud.
- Words you know better: see the meaning, then say the word. Tap the microphone (or press Space), speak, and the add-on checks that you said the word. You can play back your own voice to compare it with the model voice. If you are not heard correctly, try again (up to 3 times), or tap “I don’t know” to see the answer. Speaking practice is free and uses your browser’s speech recognition (Chrome or Edge): your voice is processed by the browser’s speech service, and the add-on never stores or sends your recordings anywhere. Allow the microphone when the browser asks. Not a good moment to speak? Tap “Can’t speak now” to skip speaking for this session, or tap the microphone icon at the top of the review to turn speaking practice off (tap it again to turn it back on). Without a working microphone, speaking cards are skipped automatically.
What games are there to practise my words?
Section titled “What games are there to practise my words?”In My words, the Play a game button (shown when you have at least 4 saved words) opens two games:
- Match pairs: tap two cards to match a word with its meaning. Your time and wrong tries are shown, and the fastest time is kept on this browser.
- Put the sentence in order: the words of a sentence you saved are shuffled. Tap them back into the right order, then check. The sentence comes from the context saved with the word, so it works offline and costs nothing. The games do not change your review schedule. Answers in a game do not move words to a later review day, and they do not count as reviews.
It says my vocabulary notebook is full
Section titled “It says my vocabulary notebook is full”The notebook has room for roughly 3,000 to 4,000 words. When it gets full, words you already know well are removed automatically to make room, best-known first; words you are still learning are never removed. You only see this message when every saved word is still being learned: review some words (they leave the notebook once mastered) or delete words you no longer need. Copying your list from time to time is a good backup.
What is “Your progress” and how does the streak work?
Section titled “What is “Your progress” and how does the streak work?”“Your progress” at the top of the My words tab shows:
- Day streak: how many days in a row you have learned. A day counts when you translate, look up a word, use Explain or save a word. The flame lights up once you have learned today. Miss a whole day and the streak starts again; hover over it to see your best streak.
- Words this week: words you saved in the last 7 days.
- Your languages: how many saved words you have in each language. Click a language to show only its words in the list below (handy for finding and deleting words saved by mistake, or copying one language); click it again, or the × in the search box, to show all words. The old community statistics (translations by all users per hour/day) were removed.
How do I see which of my words are in this document?
Section titled “How do I see which of my words are in this document?”Open the My words tab. The “In this document” card lists the saved words that appear in the document you have open, with how many times each appears; words due for review have an orange dot and come first. Click a word to select every place it appears in the document at once (shown in the usual blue selection colour). Click “Highlight in document” to colour all those words in light yellow while you read, and “Remove highlights” to take the colour away again. Highlighting changes the document itself, so everyone who opens it sees the colour; places you had already highlighted yourself are left as they are, and removing highlights only removes the add-on’s colour. Click the refresh icon after editing the document or saving new words.
